Holocaust Survival Stories in Today’s World

                                    By Sonja Herbert

The willingness of the Holocaust survivors to tell their stories is increasing. They need to let the world know about their Holocaust survival stories, so it will never happen again. Here are some examples of what they do to keep their survival stories alive in the younger generations’ minds:

  • Dr. Emerich Grinbaum volunteers at the local Memorial Center, where he tells his stories to the visitors. It’s surely not easy for him to revisit the horror he lived through. He does it because he believes knowing the Holocaust survival stories of their generation can make a difference in this world.
  • Andrew Hartman tells his Holocaust survival stories to anyone who wants to hear them: to schools, groups, and newspapers. Hartman says, telling his stories takes away his helplessness in the face of the horror he lived through, and which will be with him forever.
Tuesday, April 25th, is Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel. The streets in Jerusalem are crowded with citizens who still have their Holocaust survival stories to tell. During this day, Radio and TV stations broadcast Holocaust survival stories, and  air-raid sirens announce a two-minute period of silence in honor of the Jews killed in the Holocaust.

Here in the US, this day passed unnoticed. But the Holocaust memorial centers are open, and the survivors keep the flames of tolerance and understanding going. They tell their Holocaust survival stories in schools, and other places. Our children may have a difficult time understanding just what went on. But they do understand that what Hitler did was atrocious and should never be allowed to happen again.
And, we all agree, that’s worth the effort.
